Human Design and Parenting Your Generator Child

Does your child have more energy than seems possible?  Is bedtime almost always a nightmare?  Do you feel like your kids have rechargeable batteries that just go, go, go?

If so, you might have a Generator on your hands—and, if you’re a Generator yourself, you might totally vibe with your high-energy child.

If you’re not a Generator yourself, it might feel like your child is an alien—and you might ask, “How did they get this way? Why are we so different? Am I doing something wrong?”  Human Design offers an energetic blueprint that helps illuminate the mysteries in our lives, our relationships, and our communities.

If you don’t know what your child’s Human Design type is, you can pull their chart for free to find out here.

So, how do we use Human Design in parenting? Here are some tips to help you parent support and nurture your Generator child:

  1. Understanding Their Need for Response: - Generators are designed to respond to life rather than initiate action. Encourage them to pay attention to what excites them and to wait for things to come to them rather than pushing them to make things happen. Ask them open-ended questions like, “How do you feel about this?” to help them tune into their response. Or, if they have a Sacral Authority, you might find that asking Yes/No questions helps them process their options.
  2. Encourage Consistency and Routine: While variety can be stimulating, Generators often benefit from consistency and routine. Having a regular schedule for meals, playtime, and bedtime can help them feel grounded and secure.
  3. Teach Them the Power of Saying No: Because Generators have a lot of energy, others may expect them to do a lot. Teach them that it’s okay to say no to things that don’t feel right to them. Learning to listen to their gut response (often called the sacral response) is key to their well-being.
  4. Support Their Need for Rest: Even though Generators have a lot of energy, they still need proper rest. And, most Generators report that they sleep better and wake up recharged when they spend ALL of the day’s energy before going to bed.  Some parents will have their Generator children run laps around the house before bedtime to release the day’s energy.
  5. Encourage Patience: Generators may feel frustrated if they don’t get immediate results or if they feel stuck. Encourage them to be patient and trust that things will come to them at the right time. Remind them that responding, rather than initiating, is their natural way of interacting with the world.
  6. Help Them Manage Frustration: Frustration is a common theme for Generators when they are not living in alignment with their energy. If your child is feeling frustrated, help them identify whether they are engaging in activities that are not meaningful to them. Encourage them to redirect their focus to things that feel satisfying.
  7. Guide Them to Trust Their Gut: The sacral response is a powerful guide for Generators. Help your child learn to recognize the physical sensations in their body that signal a “yes” (often a feeling of expansion or excitement) or a “no” (a feeling of contraction or discomfort). This awareness can help them make decisions that are aligned with their true desires.
  8. Create a Stable Environment: Generators thrive in environments where they can focus on what they love without constant disruptions. Provide a stable, supportive atmosphere where they can engage in their interests, expand into flow states, and feel secure in exploring their passions.
  9. Foster Their Energy and Engagement: Generators have sustainable energy when they are doing things they love. Pay attention to what lights them up and encourage them to pursue those activities. Whether it’s a hobby, sport, or school subject, helping them engage with what they enjoy will keep their energy vibrant.
  10. Celebrate Their Productivity: Most Generators are naturally productive and can accomplish a lot when engaged in activities they love. Celebrate their achievements and let them know how much you appreciate their efforts. This positive reinforcement encourages them to keep doing what they enjoy. By understanding and supporting the natural energy and tendencies of a Generator child, you can help them grow into confident, fulfilled individuals who know how to use their energy wisely and joyfully.
